Situated in the heart of Ottawa, Izakaya Shingen offers an authentic Japanese dining experience that goes beyond the ordinary sushi bar. This cozy izakaya-style restaurant specializes in traditional Japanese comfort foods, inviting guests to savor a rich variety of dishes crafted with genuine care and attention to detail. From tantalizing takoyaki octopus balls to perfectly grilled rice balls (yaki onigiri), Izakaya Shingen captures the rustic charm of Japan’s beloved casual dining scene.
The menu is a delightful journey into classic Japanese flavors. Start with the Chicken Karaage, where the crispy, golden exterior conceals juicy, tender meat infused with a subtle umami depth. The Sweet Potato Croquettes offer a sweet and creamy contrast, while the Okonomiyaki delivers a savory pancake experience bursting with texture and layered tastes. For seafood lovers, the Grilled Mackerel and the Miso Black Cod, marinated in Kyoto Saikyo miso, showcase a smoky sweetness that lingers beautifully on the palate.
One of the standout items, lauded by patrons such as Lyna Nguyen, is the Mentaiko Udon. This dish, with its silky noodles and perfectly balanced sauce, has been praised for its unique, mouthwatering flavor that transports diners straight to Japan’s bustling street food stalls. The rich and comforting Curry Tonkatsu Don, featuring tender pork in a crispy crust embraced by a nostalgic curry sauce, has also captured the hearts of many, as WayneUS Niven reveals it evoked cherished memories of home-cooked meals.
The ambiance at Izakaya Shingen is another defining feature, with a warm, inviting atmosphere that Michael Persaud describes as reminiscent of traditional izakayas in Japan. The tasteful interior decoration and lively energy enhance the overall experience, making it an ideal spot for both intimate dinners and casual gatherings. While some guests, like Mr. Sausage, have noted that certain dishes can be quite boldly seasoned, the majority appreciate the vibrant, authentic flavors and the friendly, attentive service that complements the dining experience. The music and social vibe, highlighted by Iana “Rory” Podchasova’s remark on the lively soundtrack and sweet servers, further add to the joyful yet relaxed feel of the restaurant.
Whether you crave the crunch of deep-fried favorites like Aji Fry horse mackerel or the delicate simplicity of dashi chazuke bowls, Izakaya Shingen offers a genuine taste of Japan in Ottawa’s city center. It’s a place that invites you to unwind, explore new flavors, and savor every bite with friends or family in an authentically spirited setting.
Very authentic Japanese food but one of my favorite things about this Izakaya is the atmosphere and interior decoration. Feels similar to some older Izakaya in Japan. The food itself has great presentation and is fair prices for what you get
Has the Yaki Onigiri, 7/10 Pork Belly don, 7/10 Udon, 10/10 -- one of the best Japanese Udon I've had so far! (I'm from Toronto and I've had quite a few). This one has a nice unique taste to it. The smell and taste is just absolutely delicious.
Izakaya Shingen was amazing! It was our first visit and we will definitely be back! This is a very different menu and experience from your regular Japanese restaurant, so if you are looking for something other than sushi - try this place! The Curry Pork Tonkatsu was so delicious! The pork was tender with a crispy crust, and the curry took me back to my youth - exact taste of my mother’s and grandmother’s Japanese curry! The unagi skewer was the perfect appetizer and the good selection of Japanese beer and drinks finished off the experience! Highly recommended!
Visited with a friend on the evening of November 14th. The place was busy and had a great atmosphere. We sat by the window, and I ordered a variety of grilled skewers. However, I was really disappointed that the skewers were unbearably salty, to the point of tasting bitter. Even with the sauce, they were overly salty and sweet. Personally, I prefer my skewers with just a light sprinkle of salt and without any sauce. I mentioned this to the server, who promptly took the untouched skewers to the kitchen. The kitchen staff tasted them and agreed that they were excessively salty and bitter. They immediately contacted the owner, who comped those skewers from our bill. We were told that a new chef, who had only been working for two weeks, was responsible. My suggestion: Would it be possible for the chef to set aside a few samples to taste before serving? This way, they can ensure the seasoning is balanced—not too salty or too bland. Overall, I appreciate the staff’s responsiveness and professionalism in handling the situation!
Loved the food!!! And the atmosphere is amazing, the music was a little bit louder than I expected but nevertheless it was great fun! And the servers are really sweet and polite :D
Busy place! Interesting twists on some Japanese classics. However, I found most of the dishes really bland! There was no Umami in anything we tried. Even the curry tasted bland, although it was probably the best thing we had. The soba was bland, the Agadashi tofu was bland, the Odin was bland... Their presentation was very nice though. Anyway, cool little spot with lots of mood lighting and deco to look at. The restaurant was packed and very lively. Service was good. They came around with water refills. Just wish the food was tastier, or as tasty as they looked! Maybe just an off night. We will try again and if it is better I will update this review.
I guess it's really as good as it gets for an Izakaya in Ottawa. The food can be good, but service is really hit or miss most of the time. I have visited 4 or 5 times and half of that time, they forget drinks and bill you for them. The food is generally pretty tasty - notable the curry tonkatsudon. As for the small plates, they could generally be better but are okay - they're just expensive for what it is. All in all, I do enjoy coming here - especially with friends as it makes for a great atmosphere.
